Went across to the Wirral this morning to work on the 5 foot canvas, only to find a big old tanker moored right in front of where I was to paint. So on the hottest day of the year so far I took the canvas to where I usually paint on the Mersey near the tunnel shaft and worked just on the sea and sky to add some freshness to the painting.
With that done I worked on small oil sketch of the Belfast ferry moored at the other end of the pier and taking on cargo and cars for the journey to Belfast. As usual the quicker more lose painting is the most successful – less conscious thinking and just painting seems to always result in a better painting…..dont think – just paint! ….or at least not over think a composition….
